Library Carrels

McKeldin Library study carrels

McKeldin Library has a number of individual study rooms, known as study carrels, on the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th floors.

3rd Floor study carrels are open to all library users on a first-come, first-served basis. These rooms cannot be reserved.
4th and 6th Floor study carrels are open to all University of Maryland-affiliated library users for 4- or 8-hour reservations. You may reserve a study carrel on these floors by using our online system. Rooms may be reserved from two hours to one week in advance.

7th Floor study carrels are reserved for University of Maryland faculty and PhD students in candidacy for a full semester at a time. Faculty and PhD students in candidacy may request a study carrel on these floors by completing our online application. Carrels are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. You will be notified via email if your application is successful.
NOTE: All 7th floor carrels have been assigned for the Fall 2017 semester. If you would like to apply for the Spring 2018 semester, please apply on or after December 1 at



The Stamp Student Union has two study areas of special interest to graduate students. The first is the new Reading Room which is a quiet study area located on the corner of the Union by Campus Drive and Cole Field house.

The second is the modern and cozy Graduate Student Lounge in room 0121! Featuring comfy couches, a microwave, and FREE COFFEE THURSDAYS, the lounge is the perfect space to work on your thesis or meet about a group project. Learn more about all the lounge has to offer at

The Architecture Library

The Architecture Library is open Monday through Thursday, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. All students enrolled in programs within the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation have 24/7 swipe access with their ID cards. The Library has 2 flat bed scanners and 1 printer/copier, and lend equipment such as: DSLR cameras, model photography lights, the flat screen TV carts, portable LCD projectors. The Art Library

The Art Library houses more than 100,000 volumes in the areas of art history, archaeology, decorative arts and studio arts, including photography and graphic design. In addition to the print monograph and journal collection, the Library also provides access to a wide variety of art-related electronic resources. Learn more at 

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Library (EPSL)

Engineering and Physical Sciences library

Located in the Mathematics Building, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library (EPSL) contains materials in engineering, computer, mathematical, and physical sciences disciplines. EPSL is also a U.S. Patent and Trademark Resource Center. EPSL's collection consists of 400,000 items. About 300,000 general collection materials are located in EPSL, and the rest are located in Hornbake and at UMD's off-site shelving facility. The collection includes handbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias, indexes and abstracts, mathematical tables, atlases, directories, an extensive collection of ANSI standards and numerous electronic resources. Starting in January 2018, what was formerly known as the White Memorial Chemistry Library will merge with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library to form the STEM Library. Hornbake Library is the home of Library Media Services, and Special Collections and University Archives, including the Gordon W. Prange Collection. The library also offers quiet study space for individuals and groups. Learn more at

Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library

The Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL) is the central location on the College Park campus for music, theatre, and dance materials.  The circulating, reference, serial, and special collections include 56,000 books, 156,000 musical scores, 130,000 audio and video recordings, 4500 microform titles, and 281 active journal subscriptions. Severn Library

Severn Library is UMD Libraries’ high-density shelving facility, ten-minutes away from campus on Greenbelt Road. This facility houses unique, semi-rare, and important research collections. All items housed in the Severn Library may be requested through by anyone with borrowing privileges. Severn Library is a closed-stacks facility, and not accessible to the general public.
